Whom does one serve and what does it mean to serve? Some of us are (supposedly) interested in serving someone whom we think of as being the “Lord.” OK, what does that mean? Is this “One” that is referred to as the “Lord” in another dimension or is this “One” everywhere – but invisible? Or perhaps these are linear based questions that don’t really have sufficient application.
There are religious interpretations of a good entity and an evil one. These entities are often labeled “God” and the “Devil.” There is a Christian based story of an Angel who was named Lucifer and was cast out of Heaven. Many, or most, such stories are interpreted metaphorically by people. Often, after one has lived a bit and developed a sense of how people and situations evolve, one starts realizing that all of life is continually changing and transforming. That to which we attached a judgment often proves out to be contrary to our judgment. Therefore, judgments are not helpful. It is not our job to judge, but to allow all things to evolve into a more helpful state of Being…
If one judges things and people, it is done for one reason and one reason only. It is because one has an agenda which has not been or is not being met. One cannot have an agenda and be able to serve anything except the agenda. In this sense, we each have eyes and ears (our senses) which can only perceive from one vantage point. We perceive in accordance with our interest.
If one is interested in actually doing “good” things in all situations, one does not judge people or circumstances. The true stance of Love is that of being in service to all. The “all” includes oneself. It is about unconditional giving. When it comes to receiving back, it’s not about looking for something, but about being grateful for that which is received.
What about those who ‘claim’ to be caring about one thing, “Serving the Lord?” What is the truth of that? I have observed something about this which I feel is very important for people to consider and upon which to meditate. I find that when I am actually doing something full tilt, I’m not interested in talking about it. In fact, I am really just about doing it. I think that we sometimes kid ourselves in thinking that if we talk about doing something or of our efforts in trying to do it, that it’s the same as doing it. However, an honest appraisal proves otherwise.
In some of the blogs that I wrote a while back, I mentioned a man who is a great example of One who did things much differently than almost anyone else that I have ever known or even heard about. His name was Fred Rogers. Mr. Rogers was the man who created Sesame Street and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Mr. Rogers was a former Navy SEAL who had a unique spirit which was masterful at shining unconditional love. I remember watching a TV show where Mr. Rogers was being interviewed. The interviewer mentioned that Mr. Rogers was very involved in church activities and was very charitable with children and, in the general sense, was a very giving person. Considering all these facts, the interviewer asked a very interesting and important question, because it was very apparent that Mr. Rogers never mentioned God or religion – EVER! The interviewer asked him why? She said, “We know that you are a true believer and very involved in your Church, so why don’t you talk about it?” He said something like this in his response: “I’m glad that you asked me this because I feel that if a person is really, really about doing it,he doesn’t talk about it – HE DOES IT!” Such people make it happen through their own creative expression, their words and their action. If One is really about expressing and creating a Life in service to the Creator, One knows that it’s all in the doing. Talkers tend to do little else except talk… I’ll never forget watching that interview. It impacted my life! When Mr. Rogers passed on, Charlton Heston (who was one Mr. Rogers’ close friends) was the MC at his tribute. Mr. Heston said that he never knew a man of whom he thought more than of Fred Rogers.
Recently, I had an unpleasant conversation with my probably-soon-to-be ex-wife. She said that she saw me as a phony – someone who talks a big game, but rarely delivers. I didn’t like hearing that. Who would? So I found myself carefully examining the world that I have created. In some respects, I had to admit to myself that I haven’t always come through with plans the way that I intended. And then today, after a conversation with a dear friend/business associate, I critiqued my friend’s usage of the phrase, “serving the Lord.” Now one thing that I have learned in my life is that the moment that I call something on you (whoever that might be), I have to bring it back to me, and so I find myself writing this blog.
We live in a world which can seem pretty tough sometimes. As a human being tries to do certain things, he/she can be cut down. That outworking doesn’t seem right or even fair at times, but it does help one realize what one truly cares about. For me, I hope to evolve to be like our old friend Mr. Rogers. He claimed nothing, but did so very much… The true servant serves!
